First-year university student looking for advice

I’m a first year finance student at a top Canadian university. I am interested in the investment banking path, however I know it will be a long trek. I was wondering what I could do to improve myself before I get an internship. Being in first year makes it extremely difficult to get an internship, especially when you don’t have too much experience. Should I be contacting alumni in my school through LinkedIn? With regards to studying, the concepts learned first year are not that useful to say the least. If I were to self study, what books should I read. Should I purchase an online course on WSO? I consider myself a hard worker, but I’m quite shy by nature. That’s why I want to get a lead in order to maximize chances.
